Victorian Silver Albert Sauce Ladle, Chawner & Co
Here we have a top quality Victorian Sterling Silver Sauce Ladle in the decorative Albert pattern. Named after Prince Albert, the husband of Queen Victoria, the Albert pattern was introduced in 1840, the year of their marriage. It is one of the mid-Victorian rococo revival designs and a variation on the King's shape. A Gothic letter h is engraved at the top of the stem.
The sauce ladle, which is in a good gauge of silver, was made in London by Chawner & Co, probably the greatest of all nineteenth century English flatware makers and dates to 1869. By this time the firm was being run by George Adams who had married Mary Ann Chawner and took over when her elder brother William gave up the firm to become a clergyman.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 150 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The sauce ladle is 16.5cm / 6.5ins long and weighs a substantial 62.2g / 2.2oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are a little broken by the thread patterning but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter O for 1869, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the G.A makers' mark for George Adams of Chawner & Co.
