Victorian Silver Asparagus Tongs Chawner & Co 1877

Here we have a superb quality set of heavy Victorian Sterling Silver Asparagus Tongs in the King's Pattern. The tongs are in the classic style with long handles, pierced flat blades, one with a lip, and a central collar. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The tongs are made in London by renowned silversmiths Chawner & Co and date to 1877. Chawner & Co are considered to be the most important flatware manufacturers in London in the 19th century and they participated in the Great Exhibition in 1851. The company was founded by William Chawner in 1815 after he left his partnership with William Eley and William Fearn. He was succeeded by his widow Mary and later by his son-in-law George Adams. The firm was finally sold to Holland, Aldwinckle & Slater in 1883.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, a smooth action and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 145 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
As you would expect from Chawner & Co, these are particularly well made asparagus tongs in a good, heavy gauge of silver. They are 24.5cm / 9.6ins long, 5.7cm / 2.2ins across and weigh in at a very substantial 228.7g / 8oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside of the curve of the tongs, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter B for 1877, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the G A in conjoined circles makers' mark for George Adams of Chawner & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the asparagus tongs.
