Victorian Silver Card Case, George Unite, 1892

Here we have an elegant Victorian Sterling Silver Card Case with a fitted blue silk interior. The outside of the case has an intricate engraved design of flowers and foliage surrounding a circular blank cartouche on both front and back. The interior is lined with the blue silk and has a series of card dividers to hold the visiting cards.
The card case was made in Birmingham by renowned silversmiths George Unite & Sons and dates to 1892. George Unite & James Hilliard founded the firm in 1825 as Unite & Hilliard. After Hilliard withdrew in the 1830s, George continued by himself before the firm became George Unite & Sons in 1865. The business remained under the management of the Unite family until 1897 when it was taken over by William Lyde who retained the name up until the late 1920s.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents in the silver and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 125 years of good service. The dividers are sealed at one end and open at the other but it is not clear if this is intentional or not. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The card case is 10cm / 3.9ins by 7.2cm / 2.8ins and 1cm / 0.39ins deep. It weighs in at a substantial 111.2g / 3.9oz of which only a tiny amount is the fitted interior.
The hallmarks, down one side of the card case on both front and back, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the Gothic letter s for 1892 and the G U makers' mark for George Unite & Sons.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the card case.
