Victorian Silver Cream Jug, London, 1898

This is an elegant late Victorian Sterling Silver Cream Jug. The jug is in the Georgian Revival style with a circular stepped base, an urn shaped body, a broad lip and a high curving handle. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The cream jug was made in London by highly regarded silversmiths Holland, Aldwinckle & Slater and dates to 1898. The firm was founded in 1838 by Henry Holland and Thomas Frercks, who left the partnership in 1841. Henry Holland then continued by himself before being joined by his son, Henry Jnr in 1851. After Henry Snr’s retirement in 1883, John Aldwinckle and James Slater joined as partners to form Holland, Aldwinckle & Slater. The business continued to be managed by various members of these three families until the firm was bought out by Francis Higgins in 1922.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after over 125 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cream jug is 7.4cm / 2.9ins from lip to handle, 4.4cm / 1.7ins across the body and stands 9.5cm / 3.7ins high to the top of the handle. It weighs in at a very respectable 57.2g / 2oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, high up on the body near the handle, are a little rubbed but still okay to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter c for 1898 and the T S over W S over H H makers' mark for Thomas Slater, Walter Slater and Henry Holland of Holland, Aldwinckle & Slater.
