Victorian Silver Cream Jug, Mappin & Webb, 1890
Here we have an attractive late Victorian Sterling Silver Cream Jug with a Gilt interior. The cream jug is in the Guernsey style with a bulbous body and cylindrical neck and a minimal pouring lip. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The cream jug was made in London by world famous silversmiths Mappin & Webb and dates to 1890. Originally founded in 1810 by Joseph Mappin Snr, in 1859 the firm split into two parts which would become Mappin Brothers and Mappin & Webb. They were reunited when Mappin & Webb bought Mappin Brothers in 1902. The firm remained in the Mappin family until it was merged with Walker & Hall and Elkington & Co to form British Silverware in 1963.
Condition is good with just a couple of shallow bruises on the body and the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 130 years of use. The gilt interior is in very good condition. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cream jug is 7.4cm / 2.9ins from the handle to the far side of the body, 5.5cm / 2.1ins across and stands 7.7cm / 3ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 90.3g / 3.2oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the neck of the jug, are clear to read with just a little rubbing to the date letter. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter P for 1890 and the J.N.M makers' mark for John Newton Mappin of Mappin & Webb.
