Victorian Silver Gilt Sifter, Elkington & Co, 1877

This is a striking, top quality Victorian Sterling Silver Part Gilded Sifter Spoon. The bowl, gilded on the inside, has a Greek key pattern around the edge and a starburst pattern in the bottom. The lower part of the stem and the finial, both gilded, have classical figures with a mother and child at the top. The middle part of the stem is ungilded and twisted. The combination of gold and silver is particularly attractive.
The sifter spoon was made in Birmingham by famous silversmiths Elkington & Co and dates to 1877. Elkington & Co are one of the great names of English silverware. Founded by George Elkington in 1836, they took out the world's first silver electroplating patent in 1838 and this is what they are best known for. However they always continued to produce very high quality Sterling Silver alongside their silver plate. The company was merged into British Silverware with Walker & Hall and Mappin & Webb in 1963.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings, dents or damage, no significant loss of gilding and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 145 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The sifter spoon is 15.3cm / 6ins long and 4.9cm / 1.9ins across the bowl. It weighs in at a very respectable 38.7g / 1.36oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside rim of the bowl, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter c for 1877, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the F E makers' mark for Frederick Elkington of Elkington & Co.
