Victorian Silver Heart Trinket Dish, Chester, 1894

This is a pretty late Victorian Sterling Silver Trinket Dish. The dish is heart shaped with all over embossed decoration of scrolls and flowers surrounding a blank central cartouche.
The dish was made by silversmiths Saunders & Shepherd of London and assayed in Chester in 1894. Cornelius Saunders and Frank Shepherd began their partnership in London’s Holborn Circus district in 1878. This was a major centre for silversmiths, goldsmiths and jewellers for many years in the 19th and 20th centuries. The firm were both manufacturers and retailers, specialising in small silver items for personal or domestic use and registered marks in London, Birmingham, Chester and Sheffield. The company remained in business up until the late 1930s.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after nearly 130 years of service. At some point in time a small hole has been deliberately punched into the top of the heart, presumably so that it could be hung for decorative purposes. So here we have a trinket dish that doubles up as a Christmas decoration! Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The trinket dish measures 6.5cm / 2.5ins from top to bottom and 6.7cm / 2.6ins across at its widest point. It weighs in at 13.3g / 0.47oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside rim of the base, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter L for 1894 and the distinctive CS FS with a star between makers' mark for Cornelius Saunders & Frank Shepherd.
