Victorian Silver Mounted Inkwell & Glue Pot, 1895

Here we have an elegant late Victorian Sterling Silver Mounted Cut Glass Inkwell and Glue Pot Set. The two pieces are made from slice cut glass in cube form with chamfered edges with the glass having a slightly golden tinge to it. The inkwell has a circular silver hinged lid and collar, whilst the glue pot has a domed silver handled brush. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The two items were made by John Grinsell & Sons in 1895 with the inkwell being assayed in London and the glue pot in Birmingham. Originally established in Birmingham in 1864 as Grinsell & Bourne, John Grinsell left the partnership and set up in business with his four sons in 1871 as John Grinsell & Sons. The new firm was quickly successful and opened showrooms in the City of London and in Glasgow. They specialised in silver mounted glassware and ceramics and remained in business until the 1950s when they were taken over by Barker-Ellis.
Condition is very good, with just a tiny nibble to one of the top corners on the glue pot plus the overall superficial surface wear that you would expect after 130 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The two items are 5.6cm / 2.2ins square with the inkwell standing 6cm / 2.3ins high and the glue pot 7.8cm / 3.1ins high. The two together weigh in at 609g / 21.5oz.
The hallmarks on both items are a little rubbed but clear to read. The inkwell has the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter U for 1895 and the J.G & S makers' mark for John Grinsell & Sons. The glue pot has the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter v for 1895 and the J.G & S makers' mark for John Grinsell & Sons.
