Victorian Silver Mug, Saunders & Shepherd, 1897

Here we have a fine quality late Victorian Sterling Silver Mug with a Gilt Interior. The mug is of an unusual design with a circular beaded base and then a two tier body rising up to a flared rim. The scroll shaped handle is acanthus decorated at both top and bottom. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind, making this ideal as a gift for a christening, retirement, birthday or any special occasion.
The mug was made in Birmingham by silversmiths Saunders & Shepherd and dates to 1897. Cornelius Saunders and Frank Shepherd began their partnership in London’s Holborn Circus district in 1878. This was a major centre for silversmiths, goldsmiths and jewellers for many years in the 19th and 20th centuries. The firm were both manufacturers and retailers, specialising in small silver items for personal or domestic use and registered marks in London, Birmingham, Chester and Sheffield. The company remained in business up until the late 1930s.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, no significant loss to the gilding and just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 125 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The mug is 9.5cm / 3.7ins from rim to handle, 7cm / 2.7ins across and stands 7.8cm / 3ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 91.3g / 3.2oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the upper part of the body near the handle, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter x for 1897 and the distinctive C S and F S either side of a star makers' mark for Cornelius Saunders and Frank Shepherd of Saunders & Shepherd.
Shipping in the UK is £12.00 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the mug.
