Victorian Silver Mustard Pot, John Harrison, 1882

Here we have an elegant and high quality Victorian Sterling Silver Mustard Pot with Blue Glass liner. The pot is oval in shape, with a scroll handle and turned finial. The body is decorated with top and bottom engraved bands and on one side has an open laurel wreath cartouche, which is blank. The rim of the lid has a further engraved swag design.
The mustard pot is made in Sheffield by John Harrison & Co and dates to 1882. John Harrison registered his first Sheffield mark in 1844 and had become John Harrison & Co by the mid-1850s, later still becoming a limited company. They seem to have ceased trading at some point in the 1890s.
Condition is extremely good with no dings or dents in the silver and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 140 years of service on the table. The blue glass liner, which appears to be the original, is in very good condition with no chips or cracks. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
This is a very well made mustard pot in a good heavy gauge of silver. It measures 10.2cm / 4ins from rim to handle, 4.6cm / 1.8ins across the body and stands 6.8cmn / 2.7ins high. Without the blue glass liner it weighs a substantial 115.7g / 4.1oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together it weighs in at 201g / 7.1oz.
The hallmarks on the underside of the base are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter P for 1882, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the I.H makers' mark for John Harrison & Co. There is also a W.B mark in a diamond, which we assume is the retailer as it doesn't appear in any catalogue of UK makers' marks that we can find.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the mustard pot.
