Victorian Silver Mustard Spoon, Jos. Williams 1893

This is a good quality, large Victorian Sterling Silver Mustard Spoon in the classic Old English pattern. This is an unusually long spoon for the period and may have been ordered to go with an earlier Georgian mustard pot which had lost its original spoon. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The mustard spoon was made by Josiah Williams & Co and assayed in London in 1893. Josiah Williams & Co of Bristol were a hugely successful firm of silversmiths, the biggest in England outside of London, Birmingham and Sheffield. They traced their history back to Robert Williams succeeding to the business of William Woodman in around 1838. The firm passed through several generations of the Williams family becoming Josiah Williams & Co in 1879. Later partners included George Jackson and David Fullerton before they became a limited company in 1925. They finally ceased trading around 1940
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, no salt corrosion and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 130 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The mustard spoon is 13.2cm / 5.2ins long and weighs in at 13.9g / 0.49oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter S for 1893 and the G M J makers' mark for George Maudsley Jackson, who was head of Josiah Williams & Co at this time.
