Victorian Silver Punch Ladle, Atkin Brothers, 1892

Here we have an attractive late Victorian Sterling Silver Punch Ladle with a Bone handle. The punch ladle is in the Georgian Revival style that was very popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The navette shaped silver bowl has embossed scroll and flower decoration, whilst the stained bone handle has a barley twist central section. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The punch ladle was made in Sheffield by well known silversmiths Atkin Brothers and dates to 1892. Tracing its roots back to Thomas Law in the mid-18th century, the Atkin family took sole control of the business in 1840, first as Henry Atkin & Co and then from 1853 as Atkin Brothers. The firm manufactured both silverware and electroplate in Sheffield and also had a London showroom. They ceased trading in 1958.
Condition is generally very good with no dings or dents in the silver bowl, just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 130 years of service. The handle has been securely reattached at some point as there is a little glue residue around the join. The finial is a replacement, probably done at the same time, and is a little too large for the stem but still securely fixed. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The punch ladle is 38.2cm / 15ins long and the bowl is 9.8cm / 3.8ins across. It weighs in at 58.9g / 2.1oz.
The hallmarks, on the outside rim of the bowl, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter Z for 1892 and the H A makers' mark for Harry Atkin of Atkin Brothers.
