Victorian Silver Salt Spoon, Charles Boyton, 1889 Victorian Salt Spoon
This is a fine quality Victorian Sterling Silver Salt Spoon in the classic Fiddle pattern. Made by Charles Boyton (II) in London, the spoon dates to 1889. There were four generations of the Boyton family working as silversmiths in London between 1825 and 1948. An offshoot company under the Boyton name but not connected to the family remained in business until 1977. All the Charles Boytons were top quality silversmiths and their work is much sought after.

Made by Charles Boyton (II), the son of the founder, this is, as you would expect, a really well made piece in a good gauge of silver. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

Condition is very good with no dings or dents and only the superficial surface wear you would expect after over 130 years of service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Being a late Victorian salt spoon, it is a transitional size between the large 18th and 19th century spoons and the much smaller spoons that were produced in the 20th century. It is 8.5cm / 3.3" long and weighs a very respectable 7.5g / 0.26oz.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter "O" for 1889, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the CB in conjoined circles makers' mark for Charles Boyton (II).
