Victorian Silver Salt Spoon, Hayne & Cater, 1844

This is a good quality early Victorian Sterling Silver Salt Spoon in the traditional Fiddle pattern. The spoon has the initial N elegantly engraved at the top of the stem.
The salt spoon was made in London by silversmiths Samuel Hayne and Dudley Cater and dates to 1844. The firm traced its origin back to a business started by Thomas Wallis in around 1758. His son formed a partnership with Jonathan Hayne who eventually took sole control of the firm and was succeeded by his son Samuel Hayne who took Dudley Cater as his partner in 1836. They finally ceased trading in 1865.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, no salt corrosion and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 175 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The salt spoon is 10.2cm / 4ins long and weighs in at a respectable 12.1g / 0.43oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are nice and clear to read with just a little rubbing to the makers' mark. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the Gothic date letter I for 1844, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the S H over D C makers' mark for Samuel Hayne & Dudley Cater.
Shipping in the UK is £5 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
