This is a good quality late Victorian Sterling Silver Salt Spoon in the traditional Old English pattern. The spoon is made in Sheffield by renowned silversmiths James Deakin & Sons and dates to 1896. James Deakin founded his firm in Sheffield in 1865 and was joined by his three sons in the mid-1880s. They manufactured in Sheffield and also had retail premises in London's Holborn Viaduct, which was home to many silversmith showrooms. They remained in business until the start of the Second World War.

This spoon is in the classic Old English pattern, probably the most successful flatware design of all time. It is a well made item in a good gauge of silver and perfectly practical for modern use with a range of condiments or sauces.

Condition is very good with no dings or dents and only the most superficial surface wear, which is to be expected after over 120 years service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The salt spoon is 9cm / 3.5" long and weighs a very respectable 10.5g / 0.37oz.

The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter "d" for 1896 and the JD over WD makers' mark for John & William Deakin of James Deakin & Sons.
