Victorian Silver Sauce Boat, C.S. Harris, 1900

Here we have an unusual and inventive late Victorian Sterling Silver Double Ended Sauce Boat. The sauce boat has an oval base with a pouring lip at each end and a c-shape handle on each side. This enables it to sit in the middle of the table and be easily picked up from either side and comfortably used left or right handed.
The sauce boat was made in London by Charles Stuart Harris and dates to 1900, the last full year of Queen Victoria's long reign. Charles Stuart Harris was the son and grandson of silversmiths and founded his own firm in 1852, probably taking over his father’s business. He established a reputation for top quality workmanship and supplied silverware to many high end stores as well as selling under his own name. The firm operated from a number of premises in Hatton Garden and Clerkenwell and in 1897 became C.S. Harris & Sons Ltd. In the early 1930s they were absorbed into Israel Freeman & Sons Ltd.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 120 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The sauce boat is 13.1cm / 5.1ins from lip to lip, 11.3cm / 4.4ins across from handle to handle and stands 4.7cm / 1.8ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 93.9g / 3.3oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are well struck and clear to read except for some rubbing to the makers' mark, which is still identifiable. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter e for 1900 and the trefoil shaped C.S H makers' mark for Charles Stuart Harris.
Shipping in the UK is £12.00 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the sauce boat.
