Victorian Silver Scoop, G.E. Walton, 1893

This is a rare and unusual late Victorian Sterling Silver Scoop. The scoop is about the size of a teaspoon and has gilding to the interior of the bowl, which is embossed. The lower stem is twisted and there is a very attractive flower design at the top of the stem. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
There is some debate about the purpose of this type of scoop. Some claim it is a caddy spoon for tea leaves, others that it was used for sugar and some that it was for powdered spices such as cinnamon or ground ginger. It would work perfectly well for any of these roles so maybe it was always intended to be versatile!
The scoop is made in Birmingham by G.E. Walton & Co and dates to 1893. George Edwin Walton founded his company in the early 1880s with manufacturing in Birmingham and a showroom in London's prestigious Hatton Garden. They produced a very wide range of items including tableware and flatware, desk accessories, dressing table items and smoking accessories. The firm ceased trading in 1913.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, some wear to the gilding in the bowl and just the overall superficial surface wear that you would expect after 130 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The scoop is 11cm / 4.3ins long and weighs in at 12.3g / 0.47oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the Gothic date letter t for 1893 and the G.E.W.Ld makers' mark for G.E. Walton & Co Ltd.
