Victorian Silver Shoe Horn, William Mammatt, 1885

This is an attractive Victorian Sterling Silver Handled Shoe Horn with a Steel Blade. The silver handle is decorated with embossed scrolls surrounding a blank cartouche on the front. The cartouche on the back has the hallmark stamped into it.
The shoe horn was made in Sheffield by William Mammatt and dates to 1885. William Mammatt established his firm in Sheffield as electroplaters in around 1860. He registered his first Sterling Silver mark in 1876. The firm was renamed William Mammatt & Son at the start of 1886. They produced a fairly small range of silver products for domestic and personal use alongside an extensive range of silver plate, primarily for the table. The firm was merged into Maxfield & Sons in 1908.
Although the shoe horn has definitely seen some use, overall condition is good with just a few little dings in the handle and some wear to the high polish on the steel blade as you would expect after over 135 years of good service. It remains perfectly usable today. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The shoe horn is 17.3cm / 6.8ins long and 3.3cm / 1.3ins across the widest part of the blade. It weighs in at 56.9g / 2oz.
The hallmarks, in the cartouche on the underside of the handle, are quite worn but can still just about be deciphered. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter S for 1885 and the W M makers' mark for William Mammatt.
Shipping in the UK is £6.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
