Victorian Silver Spice Ladle, Francis Higgins 1845

Here we have an exquisite early Victorian Sterling Silver Spice Ladle with a Gilt Bowl. The ladle has a high arched stem with a rococo style piercing at the upper end. The bowl is shaped as a shell with a scalloped rim. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
Spice ladles are the smallest size of ladle and were used for sprinkling the likes of cinnamon, cayenne, allspice and ground ginger onto food at the dining table.
This spice ladle was made in London by Francis Higgins and dates to 1845. Francis Higgins was an apprentice at Chawner & Co before setting up his own business in 1817. He was a highly skilled specialist spoon maker and a principal supplier to Hunt & Roskell, one of the most famous 19th century retail silversmiths. Chawner & Co would later come under the ownership of his family business.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, no significant loss to the gilding and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 175 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spice ladle is 10cm / 3.9ins long and weighs in at a respectable 12.7g / 0.45oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the Gothic date letter k for 1845, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the F.H makers' mark for Francis Higgins.
Shipping in the UK is £6.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
