Victorian Silver Sugar Nips, Thomas Hayes, 1892

This is a good quality Pair of Victorian Sterling Silver Sugar Nips. The nips have shell bowls, feather edged stems and handles and floral engraving on both sides of the pivot.
The sugar nips were made in Birmingham by silversmith Thomas Hayes and date to 1892. Thomas Hayes registered his first mark at Birmingham’s assay office in 1887 and operated from premises in Spencer Street in the Jewellery Quarter. The firm was also registered in Chester. He produced a wide range of tableware, homeware and personal items. The company remained in business, latterly as T Hayes & Co, up until around 1910.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 130 years of good service. The pivot is in full working order and the bowls close tightly together. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The sugar nips are 11.2cm / 4.4ins long and 5.3cm / 2.1ins wide across the handles. They weigh in at a respectable 31.7g / 1.1oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the edge of the handles, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter s for 1892 and the T.H makers' mark for Thomas Hayes.
