Victorian Silver Sugar Tongs, Lias & Wakely, 1879

This is a good quality pair of Victorian Sterling Silver Sugar Tongs in the classic Old English pattern. The tongs are neat and plain without any initials or personalisation and despite their age would look completely appropriate in either a modern or period setting.
The sugar tongs are made by Henry John Lias and James Wakely in London and date to 1879. The Lias family were well established spoon makers in London and Henry's father, also Henry John Lias, was Prime Warden of the Goldsmiths Livery Company in 1861, the highest position that could be held in the venerable organisation that runs the London assay office to this day. After Henry junior's death, James Wakely would continue the company as Wakely & Wheeler.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and the absolute minimal amount of surface wear. These tongs have clearly been well looked after for the last 140 or so years! Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The tongs are 8.6cm / 3.4ins long and weigh in at 16.9g / 0.6oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the inside of the arms of the tongs are well struck and nice and clear to read. One one arm are the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter D for 1879 and the Queen Victoria duty mark. On the other arm is the HJL over JW makers' mark for Henry John Lias and James Wakely.
