Victorian Silver Table Salt, H. Wilkinson, 1842

Here we have a top quality large early Victorian Sterling Silver Table Salt on four feet complete with its blue glass liner. The table salt was made in Sheffield by Henry Wilkinson & Co and dates to 1842. Founded around 1830, Henry Wilkinson & Co operated from premises in Norfolk Street, Sheffield for most of the 19th century before finally being bought out by Walker & Hall in 1892. They produced a wide range of tableware and household items, always of good quality.
This table salt is a very fine piece in a good gauge of silver. Hexagonal in shape, it has a pierced gallery with an oak leaf motif in each panel and stands on 4 decorative shell feet. One of the oak leaves has a crest of a stork engraved on it. It would add a real touch of elegance to any dining table and because of its size it could be used for all sorts of different condiments or sauces.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and no damage to the pierced gallery. The hexagonal blue glass liner is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The salt is 7.3cm / 2.75" in diameter and stands 5cm / 2" high. Without the blue glass liner it weighs a substantial 68.2g / 2.4oz of solid Sterling Silver. With the liner included it weighs 182.5g / 6.43oz.
The hallmarks on the underside of the salt are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter "x" for 1842, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the HW & Co in a shield makers' mark for Henry Wilkinson & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery Parcel Post, which includes cover for the value of the item.
