Victorian Silver Trinket Box, W.J. Holmes, 1900

Here we have an exquisite, high quality late Victorian Sterling Silver Trinket Box. The box is oval with a hinged lid and has piecrust rims to both top and bottom. The lid is embossed with scrolls and foliage around a blank cartouche and the interior is richly gilded.
The box was made in Birmingham by silversmith William J Holmes and dates to 1900, the last full year of Queen Victoria's long reign. William J Holmes established his firm in Birmingham around 1890 and also registered a mark in Chester. He was both a jeweller and a silversmith and produced small items for personal use and for the table. The company remained in business, latterly as William J Holmes Ltd, until around 1940.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, no significant loss to the gilding and just the minimal superficial surface wear that you would expect after 125 years of good service. The hinge works smoothly and the lid closes securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The trinket box is 7cm / 2.75ins long by 4.3cm / 1.7ins wide and stands 1.8cm / 0.71ins high. It weighs in at a respectable 33.6g / 1.18oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside base, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter a for 1900 and the W.J.H makers' mark for William J. Holmes. There is a second partial set on the inside rim of the lid.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
