William IV Scottish Silver Teaspoon, Glasgow, 1834
This is a good quality William IV Scottish Sterling Silver Teaspoon in the classic Old English pattern. The initials MJ are elegantly engraved at the top of the stem.
The spoon is made in Glasgow by Mitchell & Russell and dates to 1834. William Mitchell & William Russell were partners in a retail and manufacturing silversmiths in Glasgow between the early 1800s and at least the 1840s. They were famous for their watches and antique clocks but also produced many items of household silver.
Condition is very good with only the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 180 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The teaspoon is 13.3cm / 5.2ins long and weighs 10.0g / 0.35oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion rampant for Scottish Sterling Silver, the tree, fish & bell assay mark for Glasgow, the date letter P for 1834, the William IV duty mark and the M & R makers' mark for Mitchell & Russell.
