William IV Silver Chamberstick, H. Wilkinson, 1832

Here we have a top quality small William IV Sterling Silver Chamberstick with its original Snuffer and a removable sconce. The base of the chamberstick has acanthus leaf decoration on the four corners and on the top of the handle. The removable sconce has scroll decoration around the top rim. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The chamberstick was made in Sheffield by Henry Wilkinson & Co and dates to 1832. Henry Wilkinson entered his first mark at the Sheffield assay office in 1831, although the family had been producing Old Sheffield Plate for a number of years prior to that. They made good quality silverware and electroplated items. The firm presented their wares at the Great Exhibition in 1851 and opened a London showroom in 1857. In 1892 the business was bought by Walker & Hall.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the most minimal superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 190 years of good service. There are loops at the end of the handle and the top of the snuffer that suggests they were linked by a chain but this has sadly gone. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
This is a smaller size chamberstick intended for a taper rather than a full size household candle. It measures 8cm / 3.1ins from rim to handle, 6.1cm / 2.4ins across the base and stands 5.2cm / 2ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 129.9g / 4.58oz of solid Sterling Silver.
There are full sets of matching hallmarks on the underside of the base, the removable sconce and the snuffer. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield combined with the date letter k for 1832, the William IV duty mark and the H W & Co makers' mark for Henry Wilkinson & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the chamberstick.
