William IV Silver Salt Spoon, C. Boyton, 1834

This is a good quality William IV Sterling Silver Salt Spoon in the traditional Fiddle pattern. The bowl of the spoon is gilded and the initials W L N are elegantly engraved at the top of the stem.
The salt spoon was made in London by celebrated silversmith Charles Boyton (I) and dates to 1834. The firm was founded in London by Charles Boyton (I) in 1825, based at a number of locations before finally settling in Clerkenwell. They established a reputation for fine workmanship and design that was maintained across four generations of Charles Boytons until, along with many other firms, they hit economic difficulties in the early 1930s. In 1934 a new company was formed called Charles Boyton & Son Ltd that continued into the 1970s but no members of the Boyton family were involved in this.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, no salt corrosion and just a little wear to the gilding in the bowl. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The salt spoon is 10.1cm / 4ins long and weighs in at a respectable 12.5g / 0.44oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are crisp and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter t for 1834, the William IV duty mark and the C.B makers' mark for Charles Boyton (I).
