William IV Silver Serving Spoon, Exeter, 1833
Here we have a fine quality William IV Sterling Silver Serving Spoon in the classic Fiddle pattern. The spoon has the initials "CC" elegantly engraved in script style at the top of the stem.
The spoon is made in Exeter by William Rawlings Sobey and dates to 1833. William Sobey was a specialist spoon maker who worked from premises in Queen Street, Exeter between around 1830 and his death in 1852.
The city of Exeter has a very long history of silver working going back into the middle ages. The assay office was established by Act of Parliament in 1701 and was the principle office for the whole of South West England. With manufacturing moving to the bigger industrial cities, the assay office was closed in 1883, making Exeter silver much sought after by collectors.
Condition is very good with no wear to the tip, one truly miniscule ding in the bowl and just the minimal surface wear you have to expect after over 180 years of service! Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The serving spoon is 22.3cm / 8.75" long and weighs in at a very respectable 47.3g / 1.67oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the three towered wall assay mark for Exeter, the date letter "r" for 1833, the George IV duty mark (William IV became King in 1830 but his duty mark wasn't introduced in Exeter until 1834) and the distinctive WRS makers' mark for William Rawlings Sobey.
