2 x Art Deco Silver Matchbox Holders Mappin & Webb

This is a smart Pair of Art Deco Sterling Silver Matchbox Holders. The holders are plain with openings for the strike on either side and to push open the inner tray at one end. They are engraved with a letter L in Old English style on the tops.
The matchbox holders were made in Birmingham by world famous silversmiths Mappin & Webb and date to 1936. One of the best known names in English silverware, the firm was originally founded in 1810 by Joseph Mappin Snr. In 1859 the company split into two parts which would become Mappin Brothers and Mappin & Webb. They were reunited when Mappin & Webb bought Mappin Brothers in 1902. The firm remained in the Mappin family until it was merged with Walker & Hall and Elkington & Co to form British Silverware in 1963.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each matchbox holder measures 4.5cm / 1.77ins by 2.7cm / 1.06ins and is 1.6cm / 0.63ins deep. The pair together weigh in at a very respectable 54.5g / 1.92oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the tops of one side, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter M for 1936 and the distinctive Mn & Wb in a shield makers' mark for Mappin & Webb.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
