Art Deco Silver Cigarette Case, S.M. Levi, 1934

Here we have a stylish Art Deco Sterling Silver Cigarette Case. The hinged case is oblong with engine turned decoration to front and back and Odeon style detailing on the top corner and around the blank cartouche. The interior is gilded.
The cigarette case was made in Birmingham by S.M. Levi Ltd and dates to 1934, the height of the Art Deco period.Founded by Samuel Levi in the 1880s, the firm operated from premises in Birmingham’s famous Jewellery Quarter primarily producing silverware for personal use such as cigarette cases, perfume bottles, powder compacts, vesta cases, buckles, photo frames and card cases, although they did also produce some tableware. After Samuel’s death the firm became S.M. Levi Ltd in 1931 and ceased trading at the start of the Second World War.
Condition is very good, with just a couple of small shallow bruises to the rim plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time and a working life mostly spent in a pocket or handbag. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cigarette case is 9.7cm / 3.8ins by 8.3cm / 3.2ins and 0.9cm / 0.35ins deep. It weighs in at a substantial 135.4g / 4.7oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside of the case, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter K for 1934, the George V and Queen Mary Jubilee stamp and the S M L Ltd makers' mark for S.M. Levi Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £12 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the cigarette case.
