2 x Art Nouveau Silver Salts, Edward Barnard, 1911 Art Nouveau George V 1910s %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
Here we have an elegant Pair of Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Open Salts with their original Blue Glass Liners. The salts are circular with flat bases. Each one has two whiplash handles with ivy leaf endings. The interiors of the salts are gilded. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The salts were made in London by the famous firm of Edward Barnard & Sons Ltd and date to 1911. Edward Barnard & Sons has a history that dates back to 1680 when the firm was established by Anthony Nelme. Through partnerships the Barnard family became involved in the silversmiths in 1773 and took control in 1829, renaming the firm Edward Barnard & Sons. Their most celebrated creation is the stunning silver gilt Lily Font from 1840, which forms part of the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London and has been used for Royal christenings ever since it was commissioned by Queen Victoria & Prince Albert.

Condition is good, with no dings or dents, just a small amount of rubbing to the gilt on the inside bases and the overall superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 110 years of good service. There are no chips or cracks in the glass liners. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each salt is 7.9cm / 3.1ins from handle to handle, 5.7cm / 2.2ins in diameter across the top rim and stands 3.4cm / 1.3ins high. The pair together, without the glass liners, weigh in at a very respectable 68.7g / 2.4oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together they weigh 133.4g / 4.7oz.

The hallmarks, on the outsides of the bodies near one handle, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter q for 1911 and the E B & S LD in a shield makers' mark for Edward Barnard & Sons Ltd.
