2 x George III Scottish Silver Gilt Serving Spoons

This is a superb pair of early George III Scottish Sterling Silver Gilt Serving Spoons in the Hanoverian pattern with an upturned end and a central rib down the stem. The spoons are made in Edinburgh by silversmith James Hewitt and date to 1768. James Hewitt was in business in Edinburgh between the mid-1760s and around 1795, so these are early spoons by him. He is best known for his flatware but did occasionally make other pieces of tableware.
These are very well made spoons in a good heavy gauge of silver which has then been gold plated to make them extremely luxurious. There is a design with a blank cartouche engraved in each bowl. This may have been done when the spoons were made but it is possible that it was added later during the Victorian period as Hanoverian spoons in the 1760s would normally (although not exclusively) have any design on the back of the bowl rather than the front.
Condition of the two spoons is extremely good with one spoon having a very small ding near the top of the stem and a tiny spot of missing gold plate just nearby. Other than that their are quite remarkable for spoons that are over 250 years old! They seem to have had little use but could certainly be used as serving spoons or they would be a great addition to any spoon collection. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spoons are each 21.8cm / 8.6" long and the pair together weigh a substantial 135.7g / 4.79oz of solid silver gilt.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are a little distorted as is normally the case on spoons of this age but they are clear to read. They show the thistle for Scottish Sterling Silver from Edinburgh, the three towered castle assay mark for Edinburgh, the date letter "O" for 1768 (it looks a bit like a "D" but it is the "O") and the J.H makers' mark for James Hewitt.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery which includes cover for the value of the spoons.
