2 x Silver Menu Holders, Walker & Hall, 1907/8
Here we have a handsome Pair of Large Edwardian Sterling Silver Menu Holders. The menu holders are oblong with serpentine top rims and pierced fronts surrounding blank oval cartouches. The stands at the back are half moon shaped.
The menu holders were made in Sheffield by renowned silversmiths Walker & Hall, with one dating to 1907 and one to 1908. Walker & Hall are one of the great names of English silverware. The firm was founded by George Walker in 1845 with Henry Hall joining in 1853 to form Walker & Hall. Hugely successful and very highly regarded they remained in business until they were merged with Mappin & Webb and Elkington & Co to form British Silverware in 1963.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, no damage to the pierced fronts and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 115 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each menu holder is 8.9cm / 3.5ins wide, 3.2cm / 1.25ins high and 5.7cm / 2.2ins deep. The pair together weigh in at a respectable 46.4g / 1.64oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the front of each menu holder are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter p for 1907 or q for 1908 and the distinctive W & H in a pennant makers' mark for Walker & Hall.
