5 x George III Table Knives, Thomas Nowill, 1805

Here we have a fine quality set of five George III Sterling Silver Handled Dinner Knives. The knife handles are in the Old English Bead pattern with the blades of the straight with rounded end form. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The knives are made in Sheffield by renowned cutler and silversmith Thomas Nowill and date to 1805. The Nowill family, variously spelled Nowel, Nowil, Nowill or Noel at different times, have a long history as Sheffield cutlers running from around 1700 up to the 1960s. Thomas Nowill (1747-1825) was the first member of the family to register a silver mark as well as a cutler's mark and was running the business at the time these knives were made.
Condition is good with just a couple of truly tiny dings in the silver handles and the marking and wear you would expect on the steel blades after over 215 years of good service. This was long before stainless steel was invented! Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each knife is 27.4cm / 10.8ins long and the set of five together weighs in at 403.1g / 14.2oz.
The blade of each knife is stamped with the cutlers mark NOWIL for Thomas Nowill. The handles are hallmarked with the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned letter B for Sheffield 1905 and the George III duty mark. The TN makers' mark seems to be rubbed away completely with many years of polishing.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the knives.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
