Antique Apostle Spoons George Adams/Chawner

Here we have for sale exceptionally fine quality set of six Victorian handmade Apostle spoons by one of the great names in English silver flatware Chawner & Co, who can be traced back to Ebenezer Coker and his apprentices Thomas & William Chawner. The registered maker of these spoons is George William Adams, who was married to Mary Ann Chawner, the daughter of William Chawner II.
These spoons are unusual because they do not show the more common example of the generic Apostle holding a book on the finials, instead the figure is holding a staff with a serpent. The finials' image seems to correlate most closely to the story in Exodus, in which Moses' staff is transformed into a snake and then back into a staff (when God speaks to Moses in the burning bush). Thus the figure is most likely to Moses, a rare finial image indeed.
The spoons come with their original leather box with a stunning purple velvet & satin interior.
