Victorian Teaspoons & Sugar Tongs, Sheffield, 1889

This is an elegant cased set of Victorian Sterling Silver Teaspoons and Sugar Tongs. The teaspoons and tongs are in a variation on the Queen Anne pattern with additional reeding to bot the fronts and backs of the stems and a fan heel on the underside of the bowl. Both the spoons and the tongs have the initials JLC engraved on them.
The set is made in Sheffield by silversmiths Harrison Brothers & Howson and date to 1889. They are supplied in their original box which has the retail mark for the Goldsmith's Alliance of Cornhill in the heart of the City of London. James & Henry Harrison and James Howson acquired the business of Thomas Sansom & Sons in 1847. They had their own London showroom and also supplied items to other high end retailers such as the Goldsmith's Alliance. Thefirm was taken over by Viner's Ltd in 1923 but their mark continued to be used into the 1950s.
Condition is extremely good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 130 years of use. The outside of the box is somewhat scuffed but the dark blue interior is in nice condition and both the hinges and clasp are in full working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each teaspoon is 11.1cm / 4.4ins long and the sugar tongs are 10.6cm / 4.2ins long. The set of six spoons plus the tongs, unboxed, weighs in at a substantial 112.8g / 3.98oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the undersides of the stems and inside one arm of the sugar tongs, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter W for 1889, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the H H makers' mark for Harrison Brothers & Howson.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the set.
