Art Deco Silver & Enamel Cigarette Case, 1934
Here we have a beautiful Art Deco Sterling Silver and Enamel Cigarette Case with its original silk pouch. The oblong silver case is engine turned with a rich blue guilloche enamel front bearing a silver naval crown in the centre. The interior of the case is gilded. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The cigarette case was made in Birmingham by John William Barrett and dates to 1934. John Barrett established his business in Birmingham around 1900. They primarily produced smoking accessories and dressing table items along with a few items of tableware. The firm was very successful and in 1960 became J.W. Barrett & Sons Ltd.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, no damage to the enamel and just the most minimal superficial surface wear that you would anticipate with use and the passage of time. The clasp is very slightly stiff but the case opens and snaps shuts securely. The pouch is in good condition. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cigarette case is 8.2cm / 3.2ins by 7.2cm / 2.8ins and 0.8cm / 0.31ins deep. It weighs in at a substantial 109.7g / 3.87oz.
The hallmarks, on the inside of the case, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter K for 1934, the George V Silver Jubilee mark and the distinctive J W B makers' mark for John William Barrett.
