Art Deco Silver Cigarette Case, HWPMCo, 1929

Here we have a fine quality Art Deco Sterling Silver Cigarette Case from the late 1920s. The cigarette case is roughly square with chamfered sides and all over engine turned decoration. The front has an oblong blank cartouche and the inside is gold washed.
The cigarette case is made in Birmingham by the H W Plate Manufacturing Co and dates to 1929. There is not a lot of information about this firm of silversmiths and their mark is rarely seen. They produced specialist ecclesiastical silver as well as domestic goblets and trophy cups alongside cigarette cases and other smoking accessories. Founded in 1928 they had a fairly short life and seem to have ceased trading by the mid 1930s.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 90 years of use, especially on an item that is handled regularly and spends most of its life in a trouser pocket or handbag. The hinge and clasp are both in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
This is a well made item in a good heavy gauge of silver. The case measures 9cm / 3.5ins by 8.5cm / 3.3ins and is 1.3cm / 0.51ins deep. It weighs in at a substantial 134.2g / 4.77oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside of the case, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter E for 1929 and the distinctive H W P M Co in an oval makers' mark for the H W Plate Manufacturing Co.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the cigarette case.
