Edwardian Silver Vesta Case, Harry Hayes, 1901
This is an attractive Edwardian Sterling Silver Vesta Case. The vesta is roughly square with engraved scrolling foliage on both sides and a gilt interior. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The vesta case was made in Birmingham by Harry Hayes and dates to 1901. Harry Hayes registered his mark in Birmingham in 1896. He produced a range of tableware, smoking accessories and small items for personal use into the early years of the 20th century. After his death the firm traded as H H Silverware and relocated to Sheffield at the start of World War II. They remained in business into the late 1960s.
Condition is very good, with just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 120 years of service, most of it probably spent in a pocket or handbag. The hinge is in full working order and the lid snaps shut securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The vesta case measures 5cm / 1.9ins by 4.1cm / 1.6ins and is 1.2cm / 0.47ins deep. It weighs in at a respectable 33.1g / 1.17oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside rim of the case, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter b for 1901 and the distinctive Gothic H H makers' mark for Harry Hayes.
