Art Deco Silver Cruet Set, Oliver & Bower, 1937

If you're a lover of Art Deco, then this is the cruet set set for you! This is a top quality and good size Sterling Silver 3 piece Cruet Set in absolutely classic Art Deco style. Consisting of a pepper shaker, an open salt and a mustard pot, it is square in form with each piece tapering to the base. The corners are cut to emphasize the shape and the finials on the mustard pot and the pepper shaker are tapered to match the bodies. The original blue glass liners are in the salt and mustard and there are no initials or personalisation of any kind. It is completely usable today or would make a very stylish addition to any collection.
The cruet set is assayed in Birmingham and dates to 1937. The makers' mark is for Oliver & Bower Ltd, who were actually Sheffield manufacturers who also had a very high end retail store in London's prestigious Hatton Garden district. This would have been a very expensive purchase in the 1930s for someone who wanted to be at the height of fashion.
Condition is good with no dings or dents on any of the pieces. There is a very small amount of salt marking around the rim of the open salt. The lid of the pepper shaker fits securely and the hinge on the mustard pot works perfectly. The blue glass liners are both in very good condition with no chips or cracks. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The salt is 5.1cm / 2ins square across the top and stands 4.5cm / 1.75ins high. The mustard pot is also 5.1cm / 2ins square across the top, 7cm / 2.75ins from handle to rim and stands 6.5cm /2.5ins high to the top of the finial. The pepper shaker is 3.3cm / 1.25ins square across the top and stands 10.5cm / 4.2ins tall. The set of three, without the blue glass liners, weighs in at a very substantial 182.4g / 6.43oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the side of each piece are clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter N for 1937 and the O & B Ltd makers' mark for Oliver & Bower Ltd. In addition the lids of both the pepper shaker and the mustard pot have the lion passant and date letter N stamped on them.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery Parcel Post, which includes cover for the value of the cruet set.
