Art Deco Silver Matchbook Cover, Birmingham, 1929

This is a stylish Art Deco Sterling Silver Matchbook Cover. The cover is rectangular with chamfered sides and all over engine turned decoration. The interior is gilded. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The matchbook cover was made in Birmingham by Hassett & Harper Ltd and dates to 1929. The firm was founded in the Edwardian era by John “Jack” Blennerhassett, who always called himself J.B. Hassett professionally. Harper seems to have been a silent partner. The company made a wide range of silverware and pewterware. During WW2 they specialised in miniature compasses hidden inside RAF buttons so that downed airmen could work out their location. Hassett died in 1969 and the firm ceased trading around the same time.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just a very slight misshaping on one side of the lid plus the minimal superficial surface wear that has to be expected with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The matchbook cover measures 5.7cm / 2.2ins by 4.3cm / 1.7ins and is 0.8cm / 0.3ins deep. It weighs in at a respectable 26.6g / 0.94oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside of the body, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter E for 1929 and the H & H Ld makers' mark for Hassett & Harper Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
