Here is not only a beautiful period object, but also the opportunity to create a unique, all-purpose, modern accessory by using different coloured cloth inserts. Art Nouveau silver and black leather, adjustable-length belt, Birmingham 1906, Sydney & Co. Maximum length 73cm (28 ½") - Buckle -closed 7.5 x 5.5cm. Each panel 4x3.5cm. Back support 11x6.5 cm. This classical and super quality Art Nouveau belt may have been a very high-class nurse's belt. The silverwork consists of three cast and pierced silver side-panels terminating in a silver loop, each attached to one half of a larger cast-silver buckle, together with a sculpted back support with chevron decoration. The leather is threaded through this and then around and through separate toothed grips at the end of each of each the side panels. This allows equal adjustment of the length from both sides. The leather is original and is hemmed throughout. The back support and one half of the buckle carry full English silver hallmarks for Birmingham, 1906, including maker's/sponsor's marks for Sydney & Co. There are subsidiary Sterling (lion) and date (g) marks to the other half of the buckle, each of the panels and the loops. All the marks are well-struck and legible. The maximum waist-size for the belt as it stands is 73cm (28 ½"). If a longer belt is needed, the leather portion could be replaced by a longer piece of leather or material.

The condition is overall excellent. The observations below are intended for completeness and transparency. There is nothing material that detracts from the aesthetics or function of the piece. There is minor wear and surface scratching to the silver consistent with age. There is one small area (less than 1cm square) of partial loss to the surface colour of the leather at one end where it folds around the grip (only exposed when extended to full length . See photos.

I keep hardly any stock at home, if you want to buy something and need it urgently, I will usually do it the next day, but it may take me some time to respond if you need extra photographs and/or details about the piece that I do not have to hand, as I typically visit the antiques centre just once a week.
