Silver St Christopher Half Sovereign Case, 1960

This is an unusual Mid-Century Sterling Silver Half Sovereign Case with a St Christopher medal on the front. The case has a loop at the top so that it can be worn as a pendant or as a fob on a watch chain or chatelaine. It is very rare to find cases just for Half Sovereigns as they are usually combined with a holder for a Full Sovereign.
The Half Sovereign case was made in Birmingham by silversmiths Turnner & Simpson and dates to 1960. Established in 1912, Turner & Simpson produced a wide range of silverware from flatware and fobs to smoking accessories and trophies. They were a very successful company and remained in business up until around 1980.
The half sovereign case has definitely seen some use, perhaps kept in a pocket or purse, and is a little scuffed. However there are no dents and the spring loaded coin holder is in full working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The half sovereign holder is 2.6cm from the top of the ring to the rim of the holder, 2.2cm in diameter and 1cm deep. It weighs in at 11.2g of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the back rim of the holder, are a little rubbed but still clear able to be read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter L for 1960 and the T & S makers' mark for Turner & Simpson.
