Art Nouveau Silver Bonbon Dish, J. Deakin, 1894

This is a beautiful Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Bonbon Dish from the late Victorian era. The dish is boat shaped with pierced sides and rim and stands on a pierced base. The piercing on the body creates typically Nouveau swirling lines and a heart shape on either side. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The bonbon dish was made in London by renowned silversmiths James Deakin & Sons and dates to 1894. James Deakin founded the firm in 1866 and by 1878 and had been joined by his son William as partner, with two further sons joining in the 1880s. The company was very successful with manufacturing in Sheffield and showrooms in London, Glasgow and Belfast. In 1935 they were involved in an ill-fated merger which led to the company's collapse within a couple of years.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, no damage to the pierced work and just the minimal superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after 130 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The dish is 9.9cm / 3.9ins long, 7.1cm / 2.8ins across and stands 4.2cm / 1.6ins high. It weighs in at a respectable 30.3g / 1oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the top of the rim on one side, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter T for 1894 and the J D over W D makers' mark for John & William Deakin of James Deakin & Sons.
