Art Nouveau Silver Bowl, James Dixon & Sons, 1907

Here we have a striking Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Bowl that combines the sinuous Art Nouveau style with Edwardian elegance. The bowl is circular with eight swirling panels and a rim decorated with scrolls, beads and acanthus leaves. It stands on four ball feet.
The bowl was made in Sheffield by famous silversmiths James Dixon & Sons and dates to 1907. With a history dating back to around 1806 when it was a partnership between James Dixon and Thomas Smith, James Dixon & Sons was one of Sheffield's foremost silversmiths and electroplaters, particularly noted for their relationship with designer Dr Chrsitopher Dresser whose groundbreaking silver plate teapot designs for the company are still being reproduced today. They were highly successful and remained in business up until the mid 1980s when they were absorbed into British Silverware.
Condition is very good with just one truly tiny ding in one panel plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 115 years of good service. It rocks slightly on its four ball feet. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The bowl is 17.5cm / 6.9ins in diameter and stands 4.8cm / 1.9ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 123.7g / 4.36oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the bowl, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the Gothic date letter p for 1907 and the distinctive J.D & S makers' mark for James Dixon & Sons.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the bowl.
