Art Nouveau Silver Card Case, A&J Zimmerman, 1904
This is an elegant Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Card Case from the Edwardian era. The oblong case is open topped and has typically Nouveau embossed decoration of water lilies and irises against a textured background representing water. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The card case was made in Birmingham by renowned silversmiths A & J Zimmerman and dates to 1904. The firm was founded by brothers Arthur & John Zimmerman in Birmingham in 1879, operating from premises at Regent Place in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. They later opened a second premises and a showroom in London. The firm produced a wide range of silverware of consistently good quality up until they ceased trading around 1930.
Condition is good, with just a tiny nick to either side of the case plus the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The card case is 6.7cm / 2.6ins by 5cm / 1.9ins and weighs in at 15.0g / 0.53oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, just below the top rim of the case, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham the date letter e for 1904 and the A & J.Z makers' mark for A & J Zimmerman. There is also a registered design number of 407152, which dates the original design to 1903.
