Art Nouveau Silver Mounted Claret Jug, London 1892

Here we have a superb Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Mounted Cut Glass Claret Jug from the Victorian era. The teardop shaped body is deep cut all around with an organic ascending leaf pattern and has a star cut base. The silver mount has a scalloped bottom edge, a leaf shaped hinged lid with a curled finial and a smooth flowing handle. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The claret jug was made in London by the renowned firm of John Grinsell & Sons and dates to 1892. Originally established in Birmingham in 1864 as Grinsell & Bourne, John Grinsell left the partnership and set up in business with his four sons in 1871 as John Grinsell & Sons. The new firm was quickly successful and opened showrooms in the City of London and in Glasgow. They specialised in silver mounted glassware and ceramics and remained in business until the 1950s when they were taken over by Barker-Ellis.
Condition is very good, with no chips or cracks in the glass, no dings or dents in the silver and just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 130 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The claret jug stands 23cm / 9ins high and is 11.5cm / 4.5ins in diameter. It weighs in at 1.03kg / 36.4oz.
The hallmarks, at the bottom of the collar, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter R for 1892 and the J.G & S makers' mark for John Grinsell & Sons.
Shipping in the UK is £16 by Royal Mail Special Delivery which includes cover for the value and the weight of the claret jug.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
