Art Nouveau Silver Photo Frame, Sydney & Co, 1903
Here we have a beautiful Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Photo Frame from the Edwardian period. The silver front is embossed with flowing foliage and flowers and the cartouche at the top is blank. The visible picture is oval and measures 5ins x 3.5ins. The easel back of the frame is covered in brown velvet.
The frame was made in Birmingham by silversmiths Sydney & Co and dates to 1903. Sydney & Co was founded by Judah, Albert & Lionel Ahronsberg in around 1900 at premises in Powell Street in Birmingham. They produced an extensive range of small silverware for personal and domestic use and also made a range of trophy cups. The firm was very successful and remained in business until around the mid 1970s.
Overall condition is good with just a couple of little dings in the silver and a few high points where it has been polished through by many years of cleaning. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The frame stands 19.6cm / 7.7ins high and is 14.5cm / 5.7ins across. With the strut fully extended it is 14.5cm / 5.7ins deep. It weighs in at 222g / 7.8oz.
The hallmarks, at the bottom left corner of the frame, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter d for 1903 and the S & Co makers' mark for Sydney & Co.
