Edwardian Silver Folding Double Photo Frame, 1902 Edwardian Silver Photo Frame %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
Here we have a superb Edwardian Sterling Silver Folding Double Photo Frame. The frame has two square panels which are hinged in the middle, so it is freestanding and can also be closed for storage. The silver panels have blank shield shaped cartouches in each corner and are decorated with an elaborate pierced design of scolling foliage surrounding the circular frames, which have a visible picture size of 3.75ins diameter. The backs are covered in light brown fabric.

The photo frame was made in Birmingham by highly regarded silversmiths Saunders & Shepherd and date to 1902. Cornelius Saunders and Frank Shepherd began their partnership in London’s Holborn Circus district in 1878. This was a major centre for silversmiths, goldsmiths and jewellers for many years in the 19th and 20th centuries. The firm were both manufacturers and retailers, specialising in small silver items for personal or domestic use and registered marks in London, Birmingham, Chester and Sheffield. The company remained in business up until the late 1930s.

Condition is good, with just a shalllow bruise to the cartouche in the bottom left hand corner of the right hand panel plus the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

When fully opened, the frame is 35.7cm / 14ins wide and 17.2cm / 6.77ins high. It weighs 527g / 18.6oz.

The hallmarks, in the top right hand cartouche of each panel, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter c for 1902 and the distinctive C S and F S either side of a star makers' mark for Cornelius Saunders and Frank Shepherd of Saunders & Shepherd.

Shipping in the UK is £13.00 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the frame.
