Arts & Crafts Silver Cigarette Case, T. Bros, 1904
Here we have an unusual and striking Arts & Crafts Sterling Silver Cigarette Case from the Edwardian era. The oblong case is decorated all over with an atttractive textured finish surrounding a circular blank cartouche on the front. The back of the case is curved to fit comfortably into a pocket and the interior of the case is gilded.
The cigarette case was made in Birmingham by Turnbull Brothers and dates to 1904. The Turnbull Brothers registered their mark at the Birmingham assay office in 1898. They produced a range of good quality tableware, flatware, smoking accessories and items for personal use, particularly buttons and manicure sets. The firm remained in business until about 1925.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cigarette case is 8.5cm / 3.3ins by 6.3cm / 2.5ins and 1.6cm / 0.63ins deep. It weighs in at a very respectable 82.1g / 2.89oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside of the case, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter e for 1904 and the T. BROS makers' mark for Turnbull Brothers. There is a partial set of the lion passant and the date letter e on the other side.
