We have for sale the perfect gift for the familiy bookworm, an unusual and quite hard to find Charles Horner silver and casein bookmark c1929.

This attractive bookmark harks to the days when Charles Horner was experimenting with new materials and incorporating these new materials into some of their wares. One of these materials was casein, which was actually formed from the casein derived from milk. This material was an early plastic and could be molded and readily stained with a range of colours and as such was perfect for making a goods ranging from buttons to antique jewellery, bookmarks and dressing table wares.

This particular bookmark is of a traditional shape consisting of an attractive turquoise and cream casein clip incorporating a vacant silver shield shaped cartouche all on a plain brown blade. The silver cartouch caries full Chester hallmarks for 1929 along with the makers marks for Charles Horner of Halifax.

The bookmark is 3.25 inches (9cm) long, just over half an inch (1.4cm) wide and is in an excellent condition other than some rubbing to the Charles Horner mark on the cartouche.
